Get Ready for the Run: Your Michigan Fishing License Checklist
Preparing for your trip on the Detroit River or Lake St Clair starts with ensuring you are properly licensed. Whether you are visiting from out of state or are a lifelong Michigan resident, having the correct documentation is essential for a worry-free day on the water with Canvasback Outfitters and Sportfishing.
Who Needs a License?
In Michigan, all adults 17 years of age and older must purchase a fishing license to fish in public waters. This applies whether you are actively fishing or just assisting others (such as baiting hooks or netting fish). If you are under 17, you do not need a license, though you must still follow all state fishing regulations regarding catch limits and seasons.
Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules
Since Michigan is the Great Lakes State, all fishing within the state—including the Detroit River and Lake St Clair—is freshwater. You do not need a separate "saltwater" or "tidal" permit. A standard Michigan fishing license covers all species we target, from the spring walleye run to fall yellow perch.
2026 License Pricing (Resident vs. Non-Resident)
Michigan offers several options depending on the length of your stay. For most travelers booking a charter, the 24-hour or 72-hour permits are the most cost-effective.

Where to Purchase Your License
To ensure you are ready for your 1:30 PM afternoon departure or early morning jigging trip, we recommend securing your license at least 24 hours in advance.

- Local Retailers: Many bait and tackle shops in the Detroit MI area, as well as major sporting goods stores, are authorized agents.
