Vertical Jigging Success for Early Season Walleye on the Detroit River
Detroit River - Wayne, MI
The 2026 spring walleye run on the Detroit River is officially underway. Water temperatures are beginning to stabilize, and we are seeing a significant influx of fish moving into the river system from Lake Erie. Recent trips have focused on the lower and mid-river sections, where the current breaks are holding consistent numbers of active fish.
Vertical jigging remains the primary technique for success. We have seen the most consistent action using 3/4-ounce to 1-ounce jigs tipped with plastic worms or live minnows. Natural colors like emerald shiner and chartreuse patterns have been the top producers during overcast mornings. The bite has been steady, with many guests landing their limits of high-quality walleye.
As we move into the peak months of April and May, we expect the numbers to increase as the main body of the run arrives. Our Detroit River walleye fishing charter trips are currently seeing fish in the 18 to 24-inch range, with a few larger females starting to show up.
Lake St Clair is also beginning to show life as the ice clears. While our primary focus remains the river for the next several weeks, we are monitoring the yellow perch activity near the shipping channels for our upcoming lake trips.
Current Hotspots: Mid-river channels and deep holes near the Wyandotte area.
Recommended Gear: Medium-action spinning rods with high-visibility braided line.
Water Conditions: Clarity is improving, with visibility around 2 to 3 feet.
Now is the time to secure your spot for the peak of the season. With 50 years of experience on these waters, we ensure our guests are positioned in the most productive areas for a successful day on the water.
